Sanitation is an important part of poultry biosecurity, but with so many products available, choosing the right solution depends on the application. At Southland Organics, we work with poultry producers to address sanitation challenges, and that includes exploring different approaches to cleaning, disinfection, and water-line management.
At IPPE, we talked with Southland Organics owner Mike to discuss ZeroPoint, a product developed as an alternative to peracetic acid (PAA). We talked about what sets it apart, the importance of safe handling, and its potential application in poultry water lines to address biofilm.
Choosing the Right Sanitation Product
Walk through the exhibit hall at IPPE, and you’ll find no shortage of sanitizers, disinfectants, and cleaning products. That’s understandable. Poultry production is part of the food supply chain, and biosecurity and food safety are essential to protecting birds and supporting production.
But no single product is right for every application. Quaternary ammonium compounds, alcohols, PAA, and other sanitation products each have different uses and considerations. The key is understanding where a product fits into a biosecurity program, how it will be used, and what the application requires.
For Southland Organics, ZeroPoint represents another option for producers evaluating their sanitation programs, particularly in applications where PAA is commonly used.
ZeroPoint and Peracetic Acid: What’s the Difference?
PAA has been used in the industry for years, but handling and transportation can present challenges. As Mike explained during our conversation, PAA can be difficult to handle safely, and exposure to heat and sunlight can create additional hazards.
ZeroPoint was developed to offer an alternative with a focus on performance and ease of handling. Mike described it as a naturally derived product with fast action that can be shipped without hazardous materials shipping requirements. These handling considerations are important when evaluating sanitation products, especially for operations that regularly purchase, store, and transport them.
The goal isn’t to suggest that ZeroPoint replaces every other sanitizer. Instead, it’s another option for producers to consider based on their specific needs and applications.
Exploring ZeroPoint for Water-Line Biofilm
One area of interest for poultry producers is water-line management.
Biofilm can accumulate inside poultry water lines, creating an additional challenge for sanitation programs. Mike shared that early users have tested ZeroPoint in water lines and reported promising results in breaking down biofilm.
This is an important application to consider when evaluating sanitation options. Water-line treatment has different requirements from surface cleaning and disinfection, so producers should select products according to their intended use and applicable label directions.
As with any sanitation approach, the goal is to find a solution suited to the specific challenge while supporting the broader biosecurity program.
Balancing Performance and Safe Handling
Effective sanitation involves more than choosing a product based on its performance alone. Handling requirements, storage, transportation, and the intended application also matter.
Mike highlighted ZeroPoint’s rapid action, handling characteristics, and potential use in poultry water lines. These are factors producers can weigh when comparing products and determining what best fits their operations.
Every poultry operation has its own sanitation needs. Understanding those needs is an important step toward choosing the right tools for the job.
Finding the Right Fit for Your Biosecurity Program
Biosecurity isn’t built around one product or one procedure. It involves evaluating the different risks and sanitation needs across an operation, from facility cleaning to water-line management. ZeroPoint is one option to consider when evaluating alternatives to PAA and approaches to water-line biofilm management.
