Most “natural” pest products are something a brand bought, bottled, and hoped would work. What’s Actually In It — and Why It Works

Defender’s active ingredients are essential oils: citronella, peppermint, and cinnamon oil. That isn’t a marketing softener — it’s the working chemistry. These oils are a contact insecticide: they hit an insect’s nervous system on contact and drop it, then break down instead of leaving a synthetic residue on your counters, in your soil, or in your water.

Because the actives are recognized minimum-risk ingredients, Defender qualifies as an EPA 25(b) minimum-risk pesticide — the federal category for products considered low enough risk that they’re exempt from full EPA registration. In plain terms: it’s built from ingredients the EPA already regards as safe enough to skip the registration gauntlet, which is exactly why there’s no evacuation period and no re-entry interval.

This same essential-oil formula class has been put through the wringer: in independent testing it has shown an 80%+ kill rate on target pests and larvae within 24 hours, knocking down mosquitoes on contact and controlling ticks — performance measured against World Health Organization testing standards, and in head-to-head trials it has gone toe-to-toe with leading synthetic sprays. You get that knockdown without the toxic trade-offs synthetics carry.

The Honest Trade-Off

Because Defender works on contact and deliberately doesn’t linger, you reapply more often than you would with a synthetic residual — every 2–4 weeks indoors, or after heavy rain outdoors. We’d rather tell you that up front than pretend a safe-around-your-kids product behaves like a chemical film that lingers for months. For most of our customers — and for our own crews — reapplying something they trust beats living with something they don’t.

One more honest note: contact action isn’t selective. The same hit that drops a roach will affect a pollinator you spray directly, so spray in early morning or evening and avoid hitting bees and ladybugs head-on.

Most households end up juggling three products — one for indoor bugs, one for the garden, one for the barn — each with its own safety rules. Defender handles all three.
