See Say Goodbye to Weeds: Torched Weed Killer in Action
The weed killer dilemma
Chemical Exposure
Traditional herbicides leave residue on surfaces for days. Kids playing in the yard, pets rolling in the grass, hens scratching the fence line — you're choosing between weed control and the things you actually care about.
Dead Ground
Glyphosate and synthetic herbicides keep a spot bare for months because they leave residue that lingers in the soil. That's not a feature — it's chemistry you don't want anywhere near a garden bed, a pasture, or a coop.
Pollinator & Runoff Risk
Chemical herbicides wash into storm drains and creeks, and many are linked to pollinator decline. If you keep bees or live near water, conventional weed control is a real liability.
How It Works
| Feature | What It Means for You |
|---|---|
| Clove oil + cornmint oil actives | A weed killer made from plant oils, not glyphosate — and it smells like it |
| Contact desiccant, non-systemic | Kills the foliage you spray and nothing you don't — precise spot control |
| No soil residual | Kills the weed, not the ground — replant or reseed the same spot with no waiting |
| Safe once dry | Kids, pets, and poultry can return to treated areas as soon as the spray dries |
| Concentrate that goes the distance | One gallon of concentrate makes 12-16 gallons of spray — enough to finish the job right |
Application: Mix concentrate in a pump sprayer (8-10 oz per gallon)
Mixing (concentrate only — no dilution shortcuts): • Mix 8-10 oz of Torched per gallon of water (10-12 oz for hardy or mature weeds) • Shake well before AND during spraying — the oils separate from water • Spray foliage liberally from about 6 inches until thoroughly wet, avoiding run-off Conditions that make it work: • Apply on a warm (above 60°F), sunny, calm day — heat and sunlight speed the burn-down • Hit weeds while they're young and actively growing • Re-treat if it rains within 24 hours For tough weeds: • Deep-rooted perennials need 2-3 passes, 5-7 days apart, to exhaust the root
Calculate Exact Quantity for My AreaWhy People Are Moving Away From Chemical Weed Killers
The conversation around herbicides has changed. Homeowners, chicken keepers, regenerative farmers, schools, and HOAs are looking for alternatives to glyphosate and synthetic chemicals — not because the chemicals don’t work, but because of growing concerns about exposure, soil health, pollinators, and runoff.
Torched fills that gap. It’s made from clove and mint oil and delivers fast, visible weed kill without leaving chemical residue in your soil or waterways. We’ve been making it in the USA since 2017.
How It Works
Torched is a contact herbicide. When sprayed on weed foliage, the plant oils disrupt the leaf’s cell membranes, causing rapid desiccation. On a warm, sunny day you’ll see wilting within hours.
Because it’s a contact killer (not systemic), it works on the plant tissue it touches. That makes it ideal for targeted spot treatment — driveways, sidewalk cracks, garden beds, fence lines, and around coops and pastures — where you want precision without chemical drift or anything left behind in the soil.
It Kills the Weed, Not the Ground
This is the most important thing to understand about Torched, and it’s where people’s expectations sometimes get crossed.
Glyphosate and other chemical herbicides keep a spot bare for months because they leave a residue that lingers in the soil and stops anything new from growing. That looks like “lasting” weed control. It’s actually a sterilized patch of ground.
Torched does the opposite on purpose. It burns down the weed you spray and leaves nothing behind in the soil. So when new weeds appear a couple weeks later, those aren’t the weeds you killed coming back to life — they’re brand-new seeds sprouting in healthy, living soil. That’s a living yard doing what living yards do. Spot-spray the new ones the same way.
We could make Torched “last longer” by adding soil-persistent chemistry. We won’t — not in a product meant for gardens, pastures, and coops.
The Right Tool for the Right Job
Torched excels at:
- Driveway and sidewalk cracks — spot-spray and move on
- Garden bed edges — clean up weeds without contaminating soil
- Around coops, runs, barns, and fence lines — the place chemical killers can’t safely go
- Pre-plant bed prep — burn down existing weeds, then plant the same day with no residue to wait out
For established weeds growing inside your turf, pair Torched with a soil-health program (Humates + Genesis) so your grass outcompetes weeds naturally over time.
The Torched Promise
Mix it right (8-10 oz per gallon), spray in the sun, and give tough perennials their follow-up pass. If Torched doesn’t knock down the weeds you spray, contact us — we’ll make it right. Made in the USA since 2017, and we stand behind every gallon.

I have two toddlers and a dog, so Roundup was never an option for me. Torched works just as fast on the weeds in my driveway cracks and flower beds, and I don't worry about my kids playing outside an hour later.
I am a bee keeper as well as trying to practice regenerative ag. I have cattle, sheep and free range chickens. Fence line maintenance with electric fencing is a nightmare without some help.
I was very happy to find an alternative to the carcinogenic and pollinator-killing Roundup. I've used Southland Torched at my Florida property and it works.
Frequently Asked Questions
The weeds came back in a couple weeks — did it stop working?
No — that's it working the way it should. Torched kills the weed you spray, but it does NOT kill the ground. There's no residue left behind to stop the next batch of seeds from sprouting, and that's the entire point. The only way to keep a spot bare for months is to leave a soil-sterilizing chemical residue — exactly what we refuse to do. New weeds two weeks later aren't the old ones coming back; they're brand-new seeds in healthy, living soil. Spot-spray them the same way. A living yard needs maintenance — a dead one doesn't.
Does it kill weeds down to the root?
Torched is a contact killer — it burns down the foliage it touches. Young annual weeds usually die in one pass. Deep-rooted perennials (dandelion, puncturevine, established gravel-driveway weeds) need 2-3 applications 5-7 days apart to exhaust the root. Spraying once and stopping is the #1 reason people see regrowth on tough weeds.
Is it really safe around my chickens, pets, and bees?
Yes. Torched is made from clove and mint oil and is classified by the EPA as a minimum-risk pesticide (FIFRA 25b exempt). It leaves no soil residue, so once the spray dries there's nothing lingering. It's specifically trusted around coops, runs, barns, pastures, and fence lines — places conventional weed killers can't safely go.
Why don't you sell a small ready-to-use bottle?
On purpose. A small bottle doesn't cover enough ground to prove what Torched can do — you end up spraying too thin, getting a weak kill, and blaming the product. We sell concentrate by the gallon so you have enough to do the job right the first time. One gallon makes 12-16 gallons of spray.
Will Torched kill my grass?
Yes — it's non-selective and kills any green leaf it coats, including grass and ornamentals. Use it for targeted spot treatment (cracks, beds, fence lines), not broadcast over a lawn you want to keep. For weeds growing inside your turf, pair Torched with a soil-health program so your grass outcompetes them over time.
How does it compare to glyphosate (Roundup)?
Torched is a contact killer made from plant oils — it works on what you spray and leaves nothing in the soil. Glyphosate is systemic and persistent; it keeps ground bare longer precisely because it lingers. Torched is the choice for anyone who wants weeds gone without sterilizing the soil or worrying about kids, pets, pollinators, and livestock. Plan on repeat passes for deep-rooted perennials.
