Lighting plays an important role in poultry production, but poultry house environments can be hard on traditional lighting. Moisture, ammonia, dust, and frequent washdowns all create challenges that require durable, reliable equipment.
In a recent interview with Stanton Lee of AG Lighting Innovations, we took another look at the company’s poultry lighting solutions and discussed its newest option: a water-resistant, plug-and-play LED light bulb designed specifically with poultry house conditions in mind.
A New Take on Poultry House Lighting
A few years ago, we spoke with Stanton about AG Lighting’s poultry lighting products. This time, he introduced a newer option: the AGR LED light bulb.
Unlike AG Lighting’s traditional disc-style fixture, the AGR is designed to screw into a standard socket. That makes installation straightforward for growers who want to upgrade their lighting without replacing the entire fixture.
“It’s plug-and-play,” Stanton explained.
The AGR is also designed to provide bright, efficient lighting, producing 1,100 lumens while using just 10 watts of power per light.
Designed for Poultry House Conditions
A poultry house is a much different environment than a typical home or office.
Moisture, ammonia, dust, and regular cleaning can all put stress on lighting components. Because of that, a standard household LED bulb may not be built to withstand the conditions found inside a poultry house.
AG Lighting focuses on designing products specifically for these challenging environments. According to Stanton, the company designs its products around quality and uses water-resistant components throughout the lighting system.
Water Resistance
The AGR has an IP56 rating, making it water-resistant and designed to handle the moisture normally found inside a poultry house. However, Stanton emphasized that the AGR is not intended to be pressure washed in the same way as AG Lighting’s AG20 fixture.
The AGR uses a standard A19 screw-in base, which means the socket connection remains a potential point for moisture to enter. Growers should still use caution when washing down their houses.
The AG20, on the other hand, is designed to be fully pressure washable.
Why Poultry-Specific Lighting Matters
It can be tempting to look at a poultry house light and think of it as no different from a standard LED bulb. But poultry houses put lighting through conditions that typical household fixtures don’t encounter.
Ammonia, moisture, dust, and cleaning procedures can all affect the performance and lifespan of lighting components. That’s why reliability and durability matter when selecting poultry house lighting.
AG Lighting designs its products specifically with those challenges in mind, including water-resistant components and coated boards.
A Simple Upgrade for Growers
One of the biggest advantages of the AGR is its simplicity.
Rather than requiring growers to replace an entire fixture, the bulb can be screwed into a compatible socket. That plug-and-play design gives growers another option when upgrading or replacing lighting.
For operations looking for an efficient, bright, and water-resistant lighting option without a complicated installation, the AGR may be worth considering.
