See Say Goodbye to Weeds: Torched Weed Killer in Action

The weed killer dilemma

Chemical Exposure

Traditional herbicides leave residue on surfaces for days. Kids playing in the yard, pets rolling in the grass, bare feet on the patio — you're choosing between weed control and family safety.

Soil Damage

Glyphosate and synthetic herbicides don't just kill weeds — they harm beneficial soil microbes that your lawn needs to thrive. You're solving one problem while creating another.

Runoff Concerns

Chemical herbicides wash into storm drains, creeks, and groundwater. Homeowners near waterways face real liability and ecological impact from traditional weed control.

How It Works

Feature What It Means for You
Natural active ingredients No glyphosate, no synthetic chemicals — breaks down naturally without soil contamination
Fast-acting contact kill Visible wilting and browning within 1-4 hours of application
Safe after drying Kids and pets can return to treated areas as soon as the spray dries (typically 1-2 hours)
Non-selective herbicide Kills any green plant it contacts — use for targeted spot treatment on weeds, not broadcast over lawn
Ready-to-use and concentrate options Grab-and-spray for small areas, or mix concentrate for larger jobs

Application: Spray bottle (RTU) or pump sprayer (concentrate)

Ready-to-use spray: • Spray directly on weed foliage until wet • Apply on a dry, sunny day for best results • Reapply after 7-10 days for stubborn weeds Concentrate: • Mix 4-6 oz per gallon of water • Use pump sprayer for targeted application • Avoid drift onto desirable plants Tips for best results: • Apply when weeds are actively growing • Morning application allows full sun exposure during the day • Avoid spraying before rain (needs 2-4 hours dry time)

Why People Are Moving Away From Chemical Weed Killers

The conversation around herbicides has changed. Homeowners, schools, HOAs, and municipalities are looking for alternatives to glyphosate and synthetic chemicals — not because they don’t work, but because of growing concerns about exposure, soil health, and environmental runoff.

Torched fills that gap. It delivers fast, visible weed kill using natural active ingredients that break down without leaving chemical residue in your soil or waterways.

How It Works

Torched is a contact herbicide. When sprayed on weed foliage, it disrupts the plant’s cell membranes, causing rapid desiccation. You’ll see wilting within 1-2 hours and significant browning within 4 hours on a sunny day.

Because it’s a contact killer (not systemic), it works on the plant tissue it touches. This makes it ideal for targeted spot treatment — driveways, sidewalk cracks, garden beds, fence lines, and patios — where you want precision without worrying about chemical drift or soil persistence.

The Right Tool for the Right Job

Torched excels at:

  • Driveway and sidewalk cracks — spray and forget
  • Garden bed edges — clean up weeds without contaminating soil
  • Playground and pet areas — safe after drying
  • Pre-plant bed prep — burn down existing weeds before planting

For established lawn weeds growing in your turf, pair Torched with a soil health program (Humates + Genesis) that helps your grass outcompete weeds naturally over time.

I have two toddlers and a dog, so Roundup was never an option for me. Torched works just as fast on the weeds in my driveway cracks and flower beds, and I don't worry about my kids playing outside an hour later.

Not as good as i hoped

Weeds came back even after two applications in my gravel driveway. They came within a week of the first application. Really wanted it to work.

MODEST RESULTS, NOT WHAT I HOPED FOR

sprayed the Torched weed killer on grass and weeds in April with no rain for at least 48 hrs. The results were modest at best. I actually sprayed it 3 times. One section showed some die back, but after I scalped the dead foliage a couple weeks after the first application, most of it grew back. I like the idea of using a non-toxic weed killer, but this product has not performed at all like advertised. Read more

AMAZINGLY EFFECTIVE WEED CONTROL!

Living in West Texas it's a given that many agricultural treatments just don't work here. I've been buying Torched for years to help control my weeds and the current formulation (Active Ingredients/Guaranteed Analysis:Clove Oil...........5.0%, Cornmint Oil..........5.0%, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate..........22.0%: Inert Ingredients: Water, (+)-Ethyl Lactate, Soap and Silica(85%)) is incredibly effective! One treatment and goats head (puncture vine) and everything else is gone! I use it full strength here and make sure to be wearing long sleeves, rubber boots, gloves that cover up to my long sleeves, eye protection and hat and make sure to not breathe in the vapor especially when releasing the pressure on my Flo-Master. Thank you for your feedback! We're sorry to hear Torched didn't fully meet your expectations. Torched is designed to quickly burn down foliage using natural ingredients like clove and mint oils, often killing annual weeds in one application. For tougher perennial weeds, it may require a follow-up treatment after 5-7 days to fully target the root system, especially in ideal conditions (above 60°F, sunny, and dry). We’d love to help you get the best results—try reapplying to those stubborn plants, and feel free to reach out for personalized tips or a refund if needed. Your weed-free yard is our goal!

I like the product and will use it again. Very good for an all natural product.

This works well for an all natural product. For stubborn weeds or small shrubs, it can take two maybe three treatments several days apart. I mix it up 10 ounces per gallon. It kills broad leaf grasses, and other grass is pretty quickly with one treatment usually. I’ve purchased many gallons of this and will buy it again. Read more

Works well, often requires 2-3 applications

Works well for a low toxicity herbicide but requires 2-3 applications several days apart to kill off the roots on plants with a taproot like thistle. Works best on a warm sunny day. Photo of some type of thistle below, 3 days after spraying once with Torched, but it is growing back.

Works well. Takes patience and repeat applications sometimes.

Works and requires 2-3 applications for vines or shrubs like blackberry or Scotch Broom (Cytisus scoparius) and the like. Works best when applied on bright, sunny warm days, in the morning hours. I see leaves turn brown on thistle within a few hours after applying, however grasses do not show any signs of dying off for several days to weeks. The hardier vines and scotch broom will dye off in parts, but often resprouts from the root mass, requiring another 1-2 thorough applications. I mix 12 oz per gallon. I definitely prefer the low toxicity to wildlife, humans and pets compared to Triclopyr or Tlyphosate. Read more

Effective on weeds...not so much on wild grasses

I've been using torched for years now, and it is very effective on most weeds. I have a gravel driveway and wild grass loves to grow in the gravel. Torched will almost immediately turn the surface grass brown and it looks like it was torched. But it obviously doesn't kill the roots, and the grass comes quickly back. Read more

Not as good as the original, but it works

I first used Torched in summer 2021 to clear about 2.5 acres of invasive Japanese stilt grass and wavy leaf from our woods. Bought more in 2022 and was hugely disappointed because it did not work at all. I had some communication with Southland via email and was assured they were working to improve the formula. I assume the inability to get cinnamon oil during the pandemic was a problem. Bought more in 2023 and found that it worked OK, but I was still annoyed that it did work as well as the original formula. This year I started again with a new attitude knowing that I would need to spray the same areas 2-3 times to get results rather than spraying just once. Using this approach, Torched seems to work pretty well. It definitely requires a more thorough application and the area coverage per 4 gallon backpack sprayer is about half compared to the 2021 version. Still, there is no other similar product on the market even remotely as potent. As much as I would like Southland to revert back to the cinnamon oil version, I understand why they haven't and appreciate their effort to adapt and get the best product they can to their customers. And yes, I bought more. Read more

Don G. Verified Buyer

Southland Organics replied

Hi Don, I'm really sorry to hear that your recent experiences with Torched haven't been as positive as before. The formula did change. The new formula is not as strong. We know this. You have to use more, and you have to spray twice in many cases, maybe even three if it's a hardy plant. That's just the reality of all-natural products. We didn't switch to this new formula for fun—it doesn't make us more money, it's not as potent, and it's not as easy. It is actually more expensive and more difficult for us to make it this way. But in order to make it reliably and safely over the long term, we have to pick the best, most trustworthy ingredient suppliers that are all in the US. Doing things the safe/healthy way isn't always easy, as I'm sure you know! Thanks for the feedback.

New formula still non-toxic and safe, but works faster than old formula. I loved the cinnamon oil version before Covid. The formula was changed to clove and mint oil and had to be re-approved by Washington state agriculture before I could get more. The new formula kills any green thing that uses photosynthesis almost on contact, not 3 to 4 days like before. Not cheap, but safe for my pond fish and dogs and smells good too. Wow, this stuff works good. Read more

Hi! Thanks for your feedback. Since we've changed the formula, these are about the results we expect from Torched. Hi Vicki, Yes, the way Torched (and most oil-based weed killers) works is not instantaneous. I'm sorry that this was what you were expecting. We try to be communicative about the fact that Torched does not provide an instant kill, but in a world where conventional weed killers provide quick results, I can understand where this expectation came from. However, am I correct in understanding that Torched did kill your weeds? It was just that it didn't kill as fast as you wanted?

Torched field work

I used this product in a backpack sprayer to prep some food plots. In total it was about 1/2 an acre of plot. I used 10oz per gallon as instructed. I sprayed the field the first time and within a few hours it was turning brown and killed most of the plants. It rained a few days later and I sprayed again 5 days after the initial spray. This took everything out and left the field brown and dead within 24 hours. During spraying the weather conditions were very sunny and above 90 degrees. I found it worked very well during these hot sunny conditions. The solution did touch my skin from the sprayer and burned my back but I did not rinse it off quick enough. Something to be aware of when using the product. If it does touch your skin rinse it off before it sits on there too long. I will be purchasing again in the spring to use on my larger plots. Woah!

We are super committed to using clean and safe products around our home for so many reasons. I hate to say it but because of this we’ve lowered our expectations on what some natural lawn care products can do. Torched has completely change my mind about what I can expect a natural product to do. Within 2 hours I saw change in our weeds and grass and in two days everything I sprayed was dead. So easy to use. We have a toddler and dogs and we avoided the area the afternoon that I sprayed but I felt completely comfortable with them in the yard 24 hours later. We also have chickens and a large garden and I felt totally safe and confident using Torched. I’m completely blown away by how well this worked and so grateful that I don’t have to hand weed my entire yard anymore! Read more

After 5 days with no rain there was NO difference in the weeds. I sprayed a variety of large and small weeds in gravel. Sprayed again under similar conditions but the afternoon temp was in the high 70’s. After 5 days of no rain the weeds including grasses remain unchanged. I can’t spray later in the day when it is warmer because the wind picks up. I will have to take the rest of the product to the hazardous waste dump. It has been a waste of my time and money. Perhaps it just isn’t suitable for my climate situation. Above 60 with no wind is a challenge here. I was so hopeful it would work. Read more

I love this weed killer!

This is a great weed killer. Especially if you can spray them when they are small and actively growing. I’m in the Sierra Nevada foothills, wildfire country. If I use this weed killer early enough, I don’t even have to weed eat the area involved. It can take a week or two to do its thing and that takes a bit of getting used to, but it really works great. It really works

Torched works great as a Glyphosate replacement. It does take 1 week for a full kill and does not immediately brown the weed/grass. Works great on Tall Fescue and Weeds along fence lines.

Definitely works - just give it 7 to 10 days. Apply twice if needed

I'm very satisfied with this product. You may not see results for over a week, but if applied correctly it definitely works.

Doesn't work

Applied three times following all of the guidelines. Not even the slightest indication of working. Wasted my money.

Torched not working, or takes long time to see results.

After 4 days the weeds I sprayed are healthier than ever. I would really love the product to work as I don't want to use caustic/ toxic herbacides.

Awesome product

I am a bee keeper as well as trying to practice regenerative ag. I have cattle sheep and free range chickens. Fence line maintenance with electric fencing is a night mare without some help. I quit using traditional chemical such as roundup about 5 years ago. Ive tried using vinegar and all other forms of “organic” weed killer with very little success. I have used some other products from Southland organics before with favorable results. I was leery of this weed killer they were selling but gave it a try out of desperation. I mixed a tank full based on recommendation and gave it a try. Within 24 hrs I could see some results. Within 36 hrs everywhere I sprayed was dead. The most amazing thing was it stayed dead for more than a month some areas almost two months. Unlike most conventional chemical I was retreating the some areas every few weeks. I’m still cautious with this product within 100’ of my bee hives but will do further testing next year closer to my hives. Read more

I love this product!

I've been looking for a decent weed killer that does not use glyphosate. This product is perfect for my needs. It's affordable and the coverage is good compared to everything else I've tested. It works extremely well. It does work slowly in the cooler winter-spring temperatures (50-70 degree highs) where I'm applying it but nonetheless it works great. I have to caution you; just when you think it WON'T work it does, and it works very effectively. I got a late start with it this year, next year I'll be ready because the best time to spray is when the weeds first start to emerge. You just need to have a 24 hour period without rain after application and I get that regularly here in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Also, their customer support has been great. I had a lot of questions when I first started using it and the guys at the company were quick to reply and were very helpful. Read more

Questions & Answers

Q: I have a 2.5 gallon jug of torched weed killer. Had it for a while. It has separated and it I can’t get it to mix . When it does mix it and not very well it looks like it probably will clog up spray tips and a few other things. Do you have any suggestions how to properly mix and if it does or if I strain it how effective would it be anyway? So how long really is the shelf life how long can I keep it in storage before using and it and it becomes no good? Thx

— William

A: Thanks for reaching out! Separation can happen if the product has been stored for a while, especially if it's been through hot/cold temperature swings. Here's what I'd try: Place the jug in a hot water bath (around 130-150°F) for 30-45 minutes, then shake it well. That should re-liquify everything and get it back into a uniform mix. A paint mixer attachment on a drill works great too. If it still won't come together after warming, the product has likely degraded past the point of reliable performance and I'd recommend replacing it. I wouldn't recommend straining it — you'd be removing active ingredients and the effectiveness would drop significantly. For shelf life, you'll want to use Torched within about 12-18 months and store it between 50-90°F. Avoid leaving it in a shed or garage where temps swing from freezing to 100°+. Hope that helps — let us know if you have any other questions!

Q: The FAQs say this is safe to spray in gardens and around flower beds. Does that mean it will not kill flowers or food-producing plants it is sprayed on or nearby? Or should it only be used as a perimeter spray and a different approach used within those spaces?

— Aliciamdollahan

A: Great question — and we love that you're thinking about this before spraying! Torched is a non-selective herbicide, which means it will burn down any plant it comes in contact with — weeds, flowers, veggies, you name it. So you'll definitely want to avoid spraying it directly on any plants you want to keep! Where the instructions might be a bit unclear is we are saying that Torched has no toxic residual in the soil, so it won't harm your flowers or food plants through the ground. It only affects what it touches. Therefore it is best to spray with no wind. The "safe for gardens and flower beds" means exactly what it sounds like — Torched is "safe for people, pets, and the planet" when used as directed. You won't be putting anything harmful into your soil or near your food. You just want to keep the spray off the plants you love!

Q: Hi. I have some seriously invasive elaeagnus plants, some up to 5 or 7 feet high. I also am fighting with the trunk/roots (yeah, it's that thick to almost be a trunk) of a pokeberry that are easily 8 inches in diameter. Will Torched kill these? Thanks.

— Robin

A: Hi Robin, Thanks for reaching out! Torched is a great natural weed killer for young, tender growth, but it won’t fully kill mature, woody plants like 5–7 ft. elaeagnus or large pokeberry roots. It will burn back the foliage, but these types of plants typically regrow from their deep root systems. For best results, we recommend cutting them down and using Torched on any new growth as part of an ongoing control strategy.

Q: Will this product kill poison hemlock? Is it safe for horse pasture?

— Liz L.

A: Hi Liz, It is perfectly safe for use in pastures and even around horse barns. The formula is FIFRA 25B exempt, which basically means it is made from approved ingredients that are known to be very safe. I am not sure about poison hemlock. We have not tested it on that as we do not see it in Georgia. My guess is that it would burn it down severely but since it has a deep taproot it will likely not kill the plant.

Q: I've used Torched successfully to rid garden beds of invasive plants. However, I am finding that in the areas where the invasive plants were sprayed and killed that new planted and established plants will also die. This has happened in each area that I used Torched to eliminate invasive plants. What will neutralize the toxins in Torched?

— Michael

A: Hi Michael, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your experience with Torched. I’m glad to hear it was successful in eliminating invasive plants, but I’m sorry to learn about the impact on your other plants. Torched is an all-natural, non-toxic weed killer, which means it doesn’t leave harmful residues or toxins in the soil that typically affect newly planted or established plants over time. However, the product is non-selective, meaning it can affect any plant it comes into contact with, even those that were not the original target. To address the issue you’re seeing: • Timing of Planting: After using Torched, it’s crucial to give the treated area time to recover before replanting. Typically, waiting for a week or so and watering the area to help wash away any remaining product should be sufficient. • Soil Health: Enhancing soil health by incorporating compost or organic matter can also support the re-establishment of plants. • Direct Contact: Ensure that Torched only contacts the weeds or invasive plants you wish to eliminate. Using a targeted spray or physical barriers can help protect nearby desirable plants during application. If you’re still noticing issues after taking these steps, feel free to reach out for more guidance. We’re committed to helping you maintain a healthy, thriving garden.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Torched kill my grass?

Torched is a non-selective contact herbicide — it kills any green plant it touches. Use it for targeted spot treatment on weeds, not broadcast over your lawn. Spray carefully to avoid overspray on desirable grass or plants.

How soon can kids and pets go back on treated areas?

As soon as the spray has dried, typically 1-2 hours. There's no re-entry interval like synthetic herbicides require.

Does it kill weeds down to the root?

Torched is a contact killer — it burns down the foliage. Deep-rooted perennial weeds like dandelions may require 2-3 applications to exhaust the root system. Annual weeds and seedlings are typically killed with one application.

Can I use it in my vegetable garden?

Yes, for targeted weed control between rows or around beds. Avoid contact with vegetable plants. Since it's natural and breaks down quickly, there's no soil contamination concern.

How does it compare to glyphosate (Roundup)?

Torched works faster on contact (hours vs. days for glyphosate) but is a contact killer rather than systemic. It's the safer choice for areas where kids, pets, or waterways are present. For deep-rooted perennial weeds, you may need repeat applications.
