The Scientific Route to Better Egg Quality
Dirty eggs, low hatchability and thin shells are natural problems in egg production. The natural solution? Increasing egg shell quality through strengthening breeder and layer hens' gut health and nutrition.
Imagine firmer shells. Improved hatchability. Healthier breeder and laying hens.
With healthier hens, you'll see firmer shells through improved calcium and nutrient absorption. Better absorption during digestion leads to a tighter gut and cleaner eggs, which means you save money on processing. You avoid the complications that come with a leaky gut and poor nutrition. Get these results on your farm through natural products that work in tandem with birds' biology like probiotics, vitamins and apple cider vinegar.
Why Gut Health Matters for Egg Production Hens
Gut health is essential for increased egg quality. Improved gut health minimizes the negative impact of bird stress from handling, heat stress and diseases like infectious bronchitis and enteritis. One of the easiest ways to boost your flock's gut health and immunity is adding probiotics like Hen Helper in a hen's diet. With better calcium and vitamin absorption, you will see less feed passage, firmer shells and improved hatchability.
Throughout the egg laying process, hens will exhaust their nutrient stores in an effort to produce the best egg possible. Chicken eggs are filled with things like fats, minerals, and proteins (and that is just in the egg yolk and albumin!). The shell and membranes require loads of calcium and collagen. The only way to replace these expended nutrient stores is with a nutritious diet and a well functioning gut.
Equally as important as promoting healthy gut microbiota is keeping the gut clear of mucus and other debris, producing clean eggs. Our raw apple cider vinegar, Mother Load, tightens the gut, cuts mucus and encourages water consumption.
When you protect your flock's gut health, your hens will get the most from their feed and improve their ability to lay eggs of the highest quality. This means stronger shells, cleaner eggs and better profits.
Benefits of Chicken Egg Quality and Cleanliness
Whether you're raising chickens as breeders or layers, egg quality is core to the success of everyone raising laying hens.
Breeders and layers have a common goal of high quality, clean eggs, but for different reasons:
Breeders need strong, clean eggs for increased hatchability.
Layers need an increased amount of higher quality eggs to be successful.
Providing nutritional supplements can also correct abnormalities that lead to grade B eggs. And if you sell your litter as fertilizer, a healthier gut leads to droppings that are more solid and easier to deal with.
Achieve your Ideal USDA Grading
Hens in egg production are judged on a USDA grading system based on interior quality and exterior quality all with the goal of maximizing hatchability or optimizing for human consumption. External factors include calcium deposits, body checks, egg size and shell strength. Internally, the evaluation is focused on elements like presence of abnormal meat spots and air cell size.
The air cell is an important element of determining the freshness of chicken eggs. The internal shell membrane of the egg separates from the shell at one pole to create a bubble of air. In the case of hatching chicks in a newly laid egg, this provides the first breath of air. In the case of table eggs, this is used to assign to a category based on egg ages: Grade AA, Grade A, or Grade B eggs. Newly laid eggs will have the smallest air cell and be assigned the highest grade. This is in an effort to ensure a fresh egg—Dr. Suess is the only one the likes to find green eggs in the refrigerator.

"Egg Production Doubled"
I have only been using the product for 2 weeks; however, my egg production doubled. This will become part of my normal treatment process for my hens.
—Steven B."Eggs are Larger"
My hens went straight for the waterer with the probiotics and almost emptied it! They look great and their eggs are larger.
—Moye H."Bigger, Better Quality Eggs"
Now I am getting bigger, better quality eggs in the winter than I was getting earlier in the season, and my hens look fantastic! Thank you Southland Organics for a wonderful product!

Beneficial Microbes
Our microbes are mostly Bacillus species, which are heartier than other poultry probiotics that only feature Lactobacillus acidophilus and other lactic acid-focused species. Poultry production and poultry performance are greatly increased by live microorganisms.
Our products are specially formulated with live bacteria in a vegetative form that prove a positive influence on gut health and gut integrity.
Organic Acids
Most people in commercial poultry production think of a mere acidification of water when they hear “organic acids.” While organic acids do provide some acidifying effects, they also provide additional benefits to keep your flock healthy.
Fulvic acid is "wetter than water" and serves as a destroyer of biofilms. Our acids destroy the protective layer produced by the disease-causing organisms. This mechanism assists the birds’ natural barrier function for improved immune response.
Active Carbon
The carbon baseline for our products binds harmful compounds and boosts gut integrity. This is similar The carbon baseline for our products binds harmful compounds and boosts gut integrity. This is similar to charcoal, which has been used for thousands of years to improve drinking water and for general detoxification purposes.
Activated carbon is a deeper level as it adsorbs longer chain hydrogen rich molecules. The activated carbon in Big Ole Bird has shown to adsorb benzenes, chelate nutrients and bind metals. The
Flock-Changing Results
We believe in our products’ effectiveness in increasing overall hen health because we have the science to back it up. In a third-party study, it was concluded that Big Ole Bird helps boost weight gain, improve feed conversion and fight mortality.
